State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) VIII Regional Meet officially kicked off its 35th year yesterday, December 8, at Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) under the theme, “SUC 8: Advancing Partnership for Sustainability through Sports”.
Around 3,200 student-athletes and officials from the eleven participating State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the region convened to participate on the opening ceremony of the said sporting event.
Moreover, in his welcome remarks, Dr. Victor C. Cañezo, Jr., president of BiPSU, the host school, mentioned the importance of sports in teaching values such as respect, determination, and camaraderie. “By demonstrating these values for those who will take part in these games, you capitalize that the more important aspect of the SCUAA competition is the people involved and not just the games themselves,” Dr. Cañezo said.
Highlights of the opening program include the Aerial Demonstration exhibited by the Philippine National Police (PNP), town parade participated by the 11 SUCs, Playground Demonstration of the 3, 200 freshman and sophomore BiPSU students, and the 15-minute grand fireworks display which capped the first day of the week-long activity.
Moreover, CHED Commissioner and Chairperson of the BiPSU Board of Regents Hon. Aldrin Darilag encouraged the athletes to be like Roger Casugay, a Filipino surfer participating the 2019 SEA Games who sacrificed his chance to clinch a gold medal to save a drowning Indonesian opponent.
“The true measure is not found on the number of medals you bring home or the hours of practice you have rendered, but rather on the degree of commitment you have placed to uphold the spirit of genuine friendship, cooperation, amity and teamwork,” Hon. Darilag said.
In addition, other invited officials present were CHED Regional Director Dr. George Colorado, Cong. Gerardo Espina Jr., Gov. Rogelio Espina, Naval Mayor Gerard Espina, mayors from the different municipalities of the province, and the Presidents and Sports Directors of other SUCs.
In his inspirational message, Cong. Espina stressed that the participating SUCs can unite to promote fairness, sportsmanship and integrity in all games in a friendly manner though even in a competition.
Meanwhile, Dr. Edgardo Tulin, the representative and Vice President of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) VIII and the University President of the Visayas State University (VSU), officially declared the opening of the week-long athletic meet with the hoisting of the SCUAA 8 and delegation banners.
The 2019 SCUAA VIII Games will run until December 14, Saturday.
