Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) Tigers are ready for takeoff to defend their spot in the top three (3) for the second season of the Eastern Visayas Collegiate Athletic Association (EVCAA) tournament, which commenced last September 9. The basketball team will be playing on September 16 and 17 at Tacloban City Convention Center.
Ms. Henreyna Jane C. Redublado, Chairperson for Sports Services, stated in an interview that EVCAA was organized by the Tingog Party List and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, together with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Ms. Redublado added that in the previous season, the sole organizer was the Tingog Party List. However, for this season, the latter coordinated with CHED, making EVCAA a CHED activity. She also shared what EVCAA is all about and its difference from the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA).
"It (EVCAA) consists of one sporting event, which is basketball, but only for the first season. In season 2, they plan to have a volleyball tournament for the second semester. Because in the first semester, they will only be focusing on basketball," she explained.
Furthermore, Ms. Redublado clarified that in EVCAA, teams from private higher education institutions (HEIs) can join the tournament compared to SCUAA, which only allows varsity teams from State Universities and Colleges (SUCs).
In the previous season, BiPSU ranked 2nd runner-up among eight (???? other teams. This season, Engr. Carmel Sigrid Docallos serves as the Sports Director and Saturnino Garrido assists as the Head Coach of the BiPSU Tigers, with the active participation of the three key players, namely, Ryzel Panis, JV Salloman, and Michael Barcelo.
Remarkably, the game season is divided into semesters. For this year's first semester, season 2 of the basketball competition will take place. Meanwhile, for the second semester, season 1 of the volleyball competition will be conducted.
It can be noted that the first season of EVCAA opened in 2019. It was stopped in the preceding years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the sporting event is making a comeback for its second season.
