Biliran Province, Philippines – The Biliran Province State University's School of Teacher Education recently conducted a groundbreaking "Literacy and Awareness Campaign on the Benefits of Solid Waste Management," under the banner of Project LABOG 2022 - Literacy and Awareness of the Benefits of Organized Garbage. Spearheaded by the dedicated School of Teacher Education students known as the SDG Ambassadors, this initiative is making a significant impact on the local community, guided by their advisor, Miss Miramar Serrion, a respected faculty member.
The Project LABOG 2022 was inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is focused on raising awareness and promoting responsible solid waste management. With the ever-increasing concern about environmental sustainability, the project's objectives are aligned with these goals. They include:
- Providing Information about Solid Waste Management: The project aims to inform and educate the community about the importance of solid waste management, with a specific focus on the 5Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, and Refuse. This knowledge is crucial for addressing environmental issues and improving the quality of life.
- Constructing a Segregated Trash Bin: In an effort to encourage responsible waste disposal, the SDG Ambassadors have constructed a segregated trash bin. This bin is designed to facilitate the sorting of waste into different categories, ensuring that recyclables and non-recyclables are appropriately separated.
- Cutting Back on Waste Disposal: The project underscores the significance of reducing waste and minimizing the environmental impact of improper disposal. By educating the community about the benefits of proper waste management and the role they play, Project LABOG 2022 aims to significantly reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Miss Miramar Serrion, the faculty member guiding the SDG Ambassadors, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, saying, "Project LABOG 2022 is not just about raising awareness; it's about empowering our community to make meaningful changes in how we handle waste. By understanding the principles of responsible waste management and taking action, we can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable environment."
The Literacy and Awareness Campaign, under Project LABOG 2022, has garnered considerable attention from the local community, including students, residents, and local businesses. Workshops, seminars, and informative sessions have been organized to provide valuable insights into the 5Rs of solid waste management and why it's crucial for a cleaner and greener future.
SDG Ambassador, Mr. Seg Fred George Romags, shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "Our hope is that Project LABOG 2022 will inspire lasting change. We want everyone to understand that we all have a role to play in preserving our environment, and small actions, like proper waste disposal, can lead to significant improvements."
As the project continues to make strides in the community, Biliran Province State University's School of Teacher Education is committed to fostering a culture of responsibility and environmental stewardship. The initiative serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that collective efforts can lead to positive change and contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally-conscious future for Biliran Province.
