Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) was honored with two (2) awards at this year's Internationalization Champions of Nation-Building and Sustainability (ICONS) Awards, hosted by the Commission on Higher Education-International Affairs Service (CHED-IAS). The awards were presented in recognition of the university's efforts in internationalization. The awarding ceremony occurred last October 6 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City.

The ICONS Awards 2023 follow the success of the ASEAN ICONS 2022, which championed the Philippine higher education sector. The event served as an avenue to acknowledge the high-impact initiatives of Philippine Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) towards sustainability, ASEAN awareness, and internationalization.

BiPSU was granted the ICONS Award for its recognition as one of the PHEIs with international recognition, based on the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Stars Rating System.

In the latest rankings, the university secured the 14th spot in the Crisis Management category, ranked within the 101-200 range for Global Innovative Universities, and placed between 51-100 in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Industrial Application, Student Mobility, and Openness categories of WURI. Moreover, BiPSU also got rated three (3) QS Stars by the QS Stars Rating System, highlighting individual 5-Star ratings in Teaching, Employability, Academic Development, Social Responsibility, and Inclusiveness.

BiPSU President Dr. Victor C. Cañezo, Jr. expressed his appreciation in a Facebook post, highlighting the institution's achievement among the 85 HEIs in Eastern Visayas (EV) and the 76 out of nearly 3,000 HEIs in the country that received the ICONS award.

“It's such an honor to be one (1) of the six (6) among the 85 Higher Education Institutions in Region 8 and one (1) of the 76 among the nearly 3k HEIs in the Philippines to receive this prestigious CHED recognition,” Dr. Cañezo’s post reads.

Furthermore, he also extended his gratitude to the key personnel who contributed to these accomplishments.

“I dedicate this ICONS award to the university's pillars: the BOR, Key Officials, Faculty, Admin Personnel, Students, Alumni, and all our Stakeholders. We've achieved this distinction twice now. All thanks to God and CHED for recognizing our efforts,” Dr. Cañezo’s post reads.

These achievements further solidify the university's track record of excellence. Under the leadership of Dr. Victor C. Cañezo, Jr., BiPSU remains committed to maintaining high standards and continues to have a significant impact on stakeholders in Biliran province and beyond.
