BiPSU SOE champions daily safety, ergonomics in latest ‘WoW BiPSU: Extension in Action’ radio episode

NAVAL, Biliran — To equip Biliranons with practical technical knowledge for safer homes and workplaces, the Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) School of Engineering (SOE) took center stage during the November 28 episode of the university’s radio program, "WOW BIPSU: Extension in Action," aired via Radyo Natin 103.9 FM.

Hosted by University Media and Information Office (UMIO) Director Mr. Lorenzo R. de la Cruz, the episode centered on the theme "Adlaw-adlaw nga mga Praktis sa Kaluwasan" (Daily Safety Practices), covering critical topics on ergonomics, electrical wiring, and air-conditioning maintenance.

Engineering Wellness: The Ergonomics Approach

Engr. Estelito R. Medallada, Vice President for Education of the Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines (ICpEP) - Region 8 Chapter, opened the technical discussions by addressing Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) often caused by poor posture in offices and homes.

Medallada highlighted common ailments such as lower back pain, "Text Neck," and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. He introduced the concept of ergonomics as "fitting the work to the person, not forcing the person to adjust to the work."

To combat these issues, Medallada shared the "20-20-20 Rule" for eye strain—looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—and emphasized the importance of maintaining a neutral posture where the back is supported and feet are flat on the floor.

Electrical Safety and Compliance

In a recorded segment, Engr. Jude D. Banico, President of the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (IIEE)-Biliran Interim Chapter, outlined the common errors in residential and commercial wiring.

Engr. Banico warned against the dangers of hiring non-licensed practitioners, citing the Philippine Electrical Engineering Law (R.A. 7920) which mandates that only Registered Master Electricians (RME) or licensed engineers should supervise electrical works.

He detailed several critical mistakes, including the use of undersized wires and circuit breakers, the lack of proper grounding electrodes (recommending 8.0 square millimeters THW copper wire), and the illegal tampering of electric meter seals. Banico reminded listeners that safety gear or PPE is the "last defense" against accidents and urged the public to strictly follow the Philippine Electrical Code.

Cooling and Energy Efficiency

Rounding out the discussion, Engr. Ramon L. Pitao, Chairperson of the Mechanical Engineering Department, discussed the safe installation and maintenance of air-conditioning units.

Engr. Pitao emphasized that "Safe AC = Smart AC," noting that proper maintenance not only prevents fire hazards but also lowers electricity bills. He advised listeners to clean or replace filters every 1 to 3 months, set temperatures between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, and utilize inverter technology to maximize energy efficiency.

"Safe installation plus regular maintenance and smart energy use equals safer homes, stronger businesses, and lower electricity costs," Pitao summarized.

Service: We Help Change Lives

Ultimately, the broadcast brought to life BiPSU’s core value: "Service: We help change lives." By transforming complex engineering concepts into actionable knowledge, the SOE empowered listeners to protect their health from chronic pain, secure their families against fire hazards, and reduce household expenses—tangible changes that uplift the daily lives of the Biliranon community.

The program concluded with a reminder from Mr. de la Cruz regarding the value of safety, reinforcing the university's commitment to the weaving of worthiness by providing inspiration and hope through meaningful extension services.
