CALBAYOG CITY — The delegation of Biliran Province State University, composed of more than 300 student-athletes and coaches, participated in the official opening of the 38th SCUAA Games on December 8 at Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) in Calbayog City.
Dressed in their signature blue and gold uniforms, the BiPSU Tigers, alongside other delegations from across Eastern Visayas, marched through the streets of Calbayog City in a grand parade.
One of the highlights of the opening program was the Saludo, where each SUC delegation performed a short presentation upon entering the NwSSU oval after the parade. BiPSU delegates performed a synchronized dance presentation to a remix of K’NAAN’s Wavin’ Flag and BiPSU’s official jingle, Weaving of Worthiness.
BiPSU President Dr. Victor C. Cañezo, Jr., expressed his pride in the delegation and encouraged them to embody the university's core values throughout the competition.
“We send our athletes here not just to compete and win, but to learn from the experiences they will earn,” Dr. Cañezo said. “This sporting event is an opportunity to showcase not only their skills but also their character and the values they uphold as proud BiPSUnistas.”
This year’s SCUAA Games, themed “Spark to Victory,” has drawn athletes from 11 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the region, including BiPSU, Eastern Samar State University (ESSU), Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Leyte Normal University (LNU), Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT), Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), Samar State University (SSU), University of Eastern Philippines (UEP), UP Tacloban College (UPTC), Visayas State University (VSU), and NwSSU, this year’s host.
In his message, NwSSU President Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo said the SCUAA meet is not just about sports but also about the culture, artistry, and showmanship of the participating SUCs and how they showcase these during the week-long event.
“I hope that through this sports event, you will realize the true essence of SCUAA Games that lies not only in winning but in doing your best, supporting one another, and demonstrating sportsmanship,” Dr. Pecayo said.
Dr. Pecayo also led the ceremonial spark and the declaration of the opening of the SCUAA Games. SUC Presidents, including Dr. Cañezo, spearheaded the hoisting of their respective institution’s banners.
Moreover, CHED Commissioner Hon. Ethel Valenzuela, TINGOG Partylist Representative Hon. Jude Acidre, and Calbayog City local officials attended the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, Senator Imee Marcos and former DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos, Jr., also delivered video messages.
Starting December 9, BiPSU Tigers will compete in various sporting events. The SCUAA Games will conclude on Friday, December 13.
