Biliran Province, Philippines – In an earnest effort to uplift the lives of the most vulnerable in the community, the Biliran Province State University (BPSU) School of Arts and Sciences launched the "Financial Literacy Extension Project" on May 25, 2022 at Barangay Cabungan, Naval, Biliran. This program is dedicated to extending a helping hand to the beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the Province of Biliran. The initiative is aimed at providing vital technical assistance and enhancing knowledge regarding financial budgeting, with the ultimate goal of improving the financial well-being of the 4Ps beneficiaries.
The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, commonly referred to as 4Ps, is a significant government-led social assistance program that provides conditional cash transfers to underprivileged families. Since its inception, the program has made a substantial impact in alleviating poverty and enhancing the quality of life for many families in the province.
Recognizing the importance of financial literacy as a stepping stone to financial independence and empowerment, BPSU's School of Arts and Sciences initiated the Financial Literacy Extension Project. The program is designed to equip 4Ps beneficiaries with essential knowledge and skills required to make informed financial decisions and manage their budgets efficiently.
The Financial Literacy Extension Project encompasses a diverse range of educational activities, including interactive workshops, seminars, and one-on-one consultations. A team of expert faculty members and financial advisors were on hand to guide and educate the beneficiaries on crucial aspects of financial literacy, such as budgeting, saving, investing, and debt management. These sessions were tailored to cater to the specific needs and circumstances of 4Ps beneficiaries.
Dr. Analiza B. Calles, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Financial literacy is a fundamental life skill that can significantly impact the well-being of individuals and their families. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely with the 4Ps beneficiaries, empowering them with the knowledge and tools they need to secure a brighter financial future."
The program received a warm reception from the 4Ps beneficiaries who actively participated in the workshops. They expressed their appreciation for the practical and applicable knowledge that they gained during the sessions, which has already begun to positively impact their lives.
Analyn Agcang, a 4Ps beneficiary, shared her thoughts, saying, "I never thought that understanding how to budget and save money could be so empowering. This program has given me and my family a new sense of hope and direction."
BPSU's Financial Literacy Extension Project not only contributes to the immediate financial well-being of 4Ps beneficiaries but also underscores the university's commitment to community development and education. By providing these valuable skills and knowledge, BPSU is playing a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering individuals and families to build a more secure financial future.
As the project continues to unfold, BPSU remains dedicated to providing ongoing support and guidance to 4Ps beneficiaries, ensuring that they can effectively apply their newfound financial literacy skills to achieve their long-term goals. This initiative stands as a remarkable testament to how education and community outreach can transform lives and create lasting positive change in the province of Biliran.
