BiPSU campus journalists sweep victories at nat’l media confab ‘23

Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) witnessed outstanding achievements from its official secondary and tertiary student publications, The Molder Publication and The Pillar Publication, at the recently concluded 14th National Campus Media Conference in Zamboanga City. The event, organized by the Schools Press Advisers’ Movement, Incorporated (SPAM, Inc.) from November 8 to 10, focused on the theme, "Promoting Evidence-Based Journalism in the Reel World of AI and Social Media Influencers."

The event served as a collaborative platform for campus journalists and media personnel, providing opportunities for skill showcasing and improvement through various plenary sessions and competitions.

The Pillar Publication excelled in competitions, outshining over 30 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) nationwide. Raffie John Michael Alpuerto claimed the top spot in the Backpack Journalism contest (Filipino category), and the i-Documento team, composed of Joeliza Bonto, Gem Charles Uriarte, Anton Paderanga, and coach Mr. Vincent Justine Realino, secured the third position. Tonnelyn Rendora earned the fourth Best Feature Writer in Digital Magazine, while Junmark Cabalquinto, Jerrymae de Guia, and John Vincent Delola ranked fifth in the Pambansang Pautakang Pampahayagan (Tertiary Division).

Gil A. Irinco was elected as the Visayas representative of the National Federation of Campus Journalists (NFCJ), and Miss Jenny Genoguin, adviser of The Pillar, became the regional convener for Eastern Visayas. Additionally, Miss Genoguin clinched the fourth spot in the News Writing English-Advisers category.

On the other hand, The Molder Publication also secured noteworthy achievements in various contests for the Senior High School (SHS) Division. John Louise Jorge placed fifth in the News Writing English category, while Antoinne Zuan Arcallana claimed second place in the Filipino category.

Christian Lloyd Pomar and Johanna Balondo both secured fourth place in Opinion Writing English and Filipino categories. In creativity-infused competitions, Jorge placed third in the Reel News-Feature Video English category. Kath Sarno, Rheane Fatima Gahera, and Leemar Cuizon secured the fourth spot in the Profile Feature Story and third place in the I-Dokumento for SHS Division.

Abby Capales, Gahera, and Arcallana finished third in the Pambansang Pautakang Pampahayagan (SHS Division). Additionally, Pomar, Jorge, Capales, Arcallana, and Balondo emerged as champions in the Digital Magazine Publishing category, winning several awards, including Best Layout Artist, Best Feature Writer, Best News Writer, Best Arts and Culture Writer, and third place in Best Editorial Writer.

It can be noted that this year’s media conference saw the participation of students from 39 primary, secondary, and tertiary schools across the Philippines. Moreover, next year’s media conference is scheduled to be held in Batangas at the host academic institution, De La Salle Lipa.
