Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) concluded its 5th Subol Film Festival with an awards ceremony held on March 15 at the university gymnasium. The event, part of the month-long celebration of National Arts Month 2024, was organized by the Department of Communication (DepComm), The Pillar Publication, and Communication Arts Guild (CAG) to acknowledge the filmmakers' efforts in producing their short film and documentary entries.
Prof. Januar Yap from the University of the Philippines (UP) - Cebu, alongside Mr. Mark Roland Romas, GMA Network Reporter, and Mr. Aubry Y. Lerio, Director and owner of aFilm, served as the jury for the film festival.
The Last Minute Production emerged as this year’s Subol Film Festival champions with their entry, “206.” Pahuway of Arte Production and Noescape Production’s Hingyap secured the 2nd and 3rd spots, respectively.
Minor awards were also presented to short film entries. Cedrick Bacatano Mahinay and Stephany Mahinay won the Best Lead Actor and Best Lead Actress awards for the short films Bluer Sky and 206, respectively. Gem Charles Uriarte and Michelle Klaire Durango were awarded Best Supporting Actor and Actress for the film Pahuway by Arte Productions. Last Minute Production's 206 claimed Best in Cinematography and Best in Production Design, while Noescape Production’s Hingyap received the Best Screenplay award. Joseph Kurt del Rosario won Best Director for the film Ang Kanta ni Lhai by Patrioflix.
Out of the Blue Production was named champion in the documentary film category, sweeping special awards for Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, and a Special Citation from the jury. COMM Reality Production’s Kanlungan secured the 2nd spot.
According to Dr. John Cavin M. Sabonsolin, DepComm Chairperson, winning entries now have the opportunity to compete in national and international filmmaking competitions.
The awards ceremony was attended by BiPSU key officials, DepComm faculty, jury members, aspiring filmmakers, actors, producers, and crew members.
