Almeria, Biliran – In a testament to the power of education, Biliran Province State University's School of Management and Entrepreneurship recently spearheaded a transformative community extension project led by its dedicated students. Aptly titled the "Tourism Reformation Achieved through Communication Edification (TRACE) Extension Project," this initiative, conducted in partnership with the local government of Almeria, specifically Barangay Talahid, was a collaborative effort that included the Sangguniang Kabataan of Talahid, Alpha Kappa Rho International Fraternity and Sorority, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Taking place from August 17 to 19, 2022, the TRACE Extension Project was designed to bolster knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning proper solid waste management within the Talahid community, Almeria, with a vision of sustainable tourism.
Nestled in the heart of Biliran Province, Almeria boasts the natural beauty that makes it a potential tourism hub. However, the journey towards a sustainable tourism industry demands responsible practices, including effective solid waste management. This is where the TRACE Extension Project played a pivotal role, with two primary objectives:
- Enhancing Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices on Proper Solid Waste Management: The TRACE Extension Project was conceived to enlighten the local community about the significance of proper solid waste management. By fostering an understanding of the core principles and encouraging responsible waste disposal, the project aimed to empower the Talahid residents to take an active role in preserving their environment and boosting their quality of life.
- Providing Information Materials for Sustainable Projects: In a bid to encourage continued sustainable practices, the project furnished Barangay Talahid with vital information materials. These materials are intended to serve as educational resources for the community, facilitating the long-term integration of sustainable practices.
The collaborative effort of multiple stakeholders played a pivotal role in the success of the TRACE Extension Project. The students of Biliran Province State University took the lead, guiding and educating the community members. Workshops, seminars, and hands-on activities were organized, offering participants practical insights into responsible solid waste management practices.
Mr. Erwin G. Docallos, Chairman of Barangay Talahid, shared his thoughts, saying, "The TRACE Extension Project has brought about significant change in our community. It's not just about waste management; it's about building a sustainable future for Talahid, and we are grateful for the university's involvement."
The TRACE Extension Project resonated positively with the Talahid community, with residents showing a keen interest in adopting the knowledge and practices shared during the campaign. Moreover, the project's initiatives have inspired locals to be more conscientious about their environment and the impact of their actions on the broader community.
Dr. Alexander Rex Sanosa, Adviser of SME SDG Ambassadors, emphasized the importance of initiatives like TRACE, stating, "This project is a testament to the commitment of Biliran Province State University to community development and education. By imparting vital knowledge and nurturing sustainable practices, we aim to create a lasting positive impact in Almeria and beyond."
As the TRACE Extension Project continues to evolve and leave a lasting mark on Talahid, Biliran Province State University's School of Management and Entrepreneurship remains dedicated to its mission of fostering responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship. The project stands as an inspiring example of how education and collaborative efforts can bring about enduring positive change, furthering the prospects of sustainable tourism in Almeria.
