Highlighting the university's rapidly growing footprint in agricultural innovation and sustainable development, the Abaca Entomopathogen Project of Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) – Biliran Campus has garnered prestigious recognition in two consecutive major scientific gatherings in the Visayas, cementing the institution's status as a rising hub for research solutions.
The research team first made waves on the national stage by securing the 2nd Best Poster Award during the 5th DOST-PCAARRD Graduate Alumni Association, Inc. (DPGAA) Biennial Convention. The event, held from November 26–27, 2025, at the Paradise Garden Resort Hotel and Convention Center in Malay, Aklan, gathered top-tier researchers and scholars from across the archipelago.
Competing against a diverse array of research entries from established state universities and national line agencies, the BiPSU-Biliran Campus team distinguished itself with its insightful presentation on biological control agents. Their study focuses on the use of entomopathogens—natural enemies of pests—to combat infestations in abaca, offering a vital, eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides for the region’s agricultural sector.
Following their victory in Aklan, the project team sustained its momentum at the regional level just days later. Another research output from the same project was selected as a finalist entry for the Best RDE Poster during the 37th Joint Visayas Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Program (ViCARP) and Eastern Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Network (EViAFRREDN) Regional Research, Development, and Extension Symposium.
This regional symposium, held from December 2–3, 2025, at the Summit Hotel in Tacloban City, serves as the premier platform for disseminating high-impact research in Eastern Visayas. Being named a finalist among the region’s best underscores the scientific rigor and relevance of BiPSU’s work in protecting the abaca industry, a top economic driver for the province.
University President Prof. Victor C. Cañezo, Jr., EdD, CHRP, commended the research team for their string of achievements, emphasizing that these accolades reflect the institution's deeper mission to serve the community through science.
"These recognitions are a clear manifestation of our weaving of worthiness in the academe," Prof. Cañezo stated. "By producing high-quality research that competes on national platforms, we are proving that BiPSU is not just an institution of learning, but a hub of solutions that directly contribute to the agricultural development of our province and the region."
The consecutive awards underscore the university's unwavering dedication to producing high-impact research that transcends academic requirements to address real-world challenges, ensuring that the fruits of academic labor translate into tangible benefits for local farmers.
