BiPSU culminates Women’s Month 2023

Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) through its Gender and Development (GAD) Office concluded the nationwide observance of the 2023 Women's Month celebration through a series of activities, on March 29, at the BiPSU gymnasium.

In consonance with the 2023 Women’s Month Celebration, BiPSU GAD Office spearheaded a sequence of events called GADTalks which tackled the various knowledge and rights of women in society, HERStory which is a series of a documentary films featuring women's empowerment in different fields in the society and an awarding of the top 10 winners of the 2023 Women Weavers Award.

The culmination included the continuation of the GAD Talks dubbed as “GAD TALKS Part 2.” The resource speakers who provided inputs were Attorney Sean Blenn Samson, District Public Attorney of Naval who talked about “Gender Equality and Relevant Laws,” and Professor Ma. Aurora Teresita Tabada, Head of the Visayas State University (VSU) GAD Center, who gave inputs about “Creating an Inclusive Academic Society."

During his talk, Atty. Samson reviewed the laws in the 1987 constitution that protect women and advance gender equality. In order to enlighten the audience about this important problem, he presented examples from real-life situations.

On the other hand, Prof. Tabada highlighted that the university should be a safe space for everyone and a hub for creativity. She also presented the sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) of every individual and provided role models for each type.

During lunch, the nine (9) entries of the HERStory short documentary film were viewed and watched by the audience. After viewing the films, an awarding ceremony followed.

The winning film entitled "Wheelchair" emerged as the champion while “Spotless Streets” and "TRANSition" notched the second and third places, respectively.

In the latter part of the culmination activity, the top 10 winners of the 2023 Women Weavers Award were recognized namely Dr. Analiza Calles, Professor II of the School of Technology and Computer Studies (STCS); Dr. Jinky Macabago, Chairperson of Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNED) and Bachelor or Early Childhood Education (BECED) of the School of Teacher Education (STED); Dr. Annel Ruth Celis, Chairperson of the BS in Economics (BS Econ) and Masters in Public Management (MPM) programs; Dr. Chona Sabinay, STCS Dean; Ms. Hazel Espejo, Instructor of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) and GAD Secretariat; Dr. Vilma Gayrama, Chairperson of Extension Services Office (ESO) Biliran Campus; Ms. Danica Ybañez, Science Research Assistant of the BiPSU Institutional Planning Office (IPO); Mrs. Jocelyn Tonelete, Admin Aide III of the Cashier’s Office; Mrs. Guadalupe Aplaya, Contract Admin of BiPSU; and Ms. Merlyna Sacare, Faculty of STED.

The recognitions were awarded to the outstanding women who weaved excellence through their service to the university and the community.
