Biliran Province State University (BiPSU) demonstrated anew that it could compete not only on a national level but also on an international field when a paper written by a faculty member at BiPSU-Biliran Campus was accepted into the Scopus Journal, the world's largest abstract and citation database.
Ruffy Rodrigo’s paper entitled “Historical mixed-severity disturbances shape current diameter distributions of primary temperate Norway spruce mountain forests in Europe” is the first publication from BiPSU to be listed in the Scopus.
Rodrigo, 32, is now pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Forest Sciences (PhD) degree at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague in Czech Republic, with a university scholarship sponsored by the Czech government.
Rodrigo mentioned that his paper is about how natural disturbances affect the current structure and function of forests.
“My paper is trying to look at how disturbances influence the distribution of trees in one of the significant mountain temperate forests in Europe. We have more than ca. 700 plots (nine countries), and we are publishing in the Scopus journal with a high impact factor,” he said.
According to him, he had to find a journal that was suitable to his paper’s cause.
“I submitted it to forest ecology and management because it has potential in terms of the content of our article.”
He added that the Netherlands-based Scopus accepted his paper to be published in their database because there is potential for the public readers.
While he worked as the first author of the paper who does the majority of the works, including data collection, data management and analysis, and publishing, he also had to collaborate with researchers from other countries, including Czech Republic, USA, Slovenia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Romania, and France.
He narrated that getting his paper published in the Scopus Journal requires a lot of work and time.
It would take him at least five months to one year for only the publishing part. “So think about the time consumed for data collection and analysis,” he said.
He also noted that it is part of his PhD requirements to have three papers published in the Scopus journal as the first author.
Rodrigo is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Forestry at the Visayas State University in Baybay City. He took his degree in Master of Science in Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology at Georg-August- Universität Göttingen in Germany.
In February 2016, he was hired at the Department of Forest Science (previously Department of Forestry) of BiPSU-Biliran Campus. In 2018, he availed of the study leave to pursue his PhD abroad.
